Surf IBSP is a weeklong surfing experience designed to introduce beginners to the surfing lifestyle or sharpen the skills of amateur surfers. IBSP Naturalists and avid surfers will take you on a wild ride filled with games, lessons, stewardship and most of all, lots of time in the water surfing! Ages: 8-18
What to wear: Each day, kids should come dressed in swimsuit, shirt & shorts (long-sleeved sun protection shirts are recommended), hat and water shoes/sports sandals. Pack a change of clothes and a towel in their backpack.
What to bring: Sunscreen, towel, drinking water, wear a bathing suit, shoes, masks, snacks
*Foam surfboards and rash guards are provided, but if you have your own surfboard, wetsuit/rash guard you can bring it
Daily activities include:
-Surfing Tutorial
-Surfing lessons
-Environmental Stewardship
-Education on the history of surfing, wave structure, forecasting, safety, the science of surfing, etiquette, professional and competition surfing and much more!
Education Topics:
Day 1: How to surf waves: how are waves formed, wave energy, direction and how it applies to surfing
Day 2: Forecasting for surfing/safety: wind, rip currents, weather, tides, species to avoid
Day 3: The science of surfing: how surfing works, board dynamics; shape, size, volume, bottom contour
Day 4: History of surfing and style progression; new school action to maintaining the history old school
Day 5: World Surfing League, surf competition rules and types, etiquette, style points, influential surfers
